W hat exactly does being a light-skinned Latina mean for me? It means that all at once, I am just dark enough, too dark or not dark enough at all. In college, a white classmate once touched my arm and said that she loved my tan. In that moment, however, I stopped being me. I was just a nice tan. I may as well have been a chemically constructed liquid, something she could purchase in a bottle or spray on herself at the beach. Colorism favors people with lighter skin tones and violently dismisses those with darker ones. You know what? If I dress a certain way — put on some boat shoes, a polo, maybe some pearl earrings — I could maybe even cross over into the land of whiteness.

The survey asks about the priority for critical care if the availability of ventilators became limited in some hospitals. Among U. November 20 is Latina Equal Pay Day, the day that marks how long into a Latina would have to work in order to be paid the same wages her white male counterpart was paid last year. Put another way, a Latina would have to be in the workforce for 57 years to earn what a non-Hispanic white man would earn after 30 years in the workforce. This gap narrows—but not dramatically—when we control for education, years of experience, and location by regression-adjusting the differences between workers.
Using this method, we find that, on average, Latina workers are paid only 66 cents on the dollar relative to white non-Hispanic men. The wage gap between Latina workers and white non-Hispanic male workers persists across the wage distribution, within occupations, and among those with the same amount of education. Figure A shows average wages for Hispanic women and white non-Hispanic men at different levels of educational attainment.
At every level of education, white non-Hispanic men are paid more than Hispanic women. Much of these differences are grounded in the presence of occupational segregation. Latina workers are far more likely to be found in certain low-wage professions than white men are and less common in high-wage professions. But, even in professions with more Latina workers, they still are paid less on average than their white male colleagues.
In every one of them, white men, on average, are paid more than their Latina counterparts. Since Hispanic women continue to be over-represented in low-wage jobs, policies that lift wages at the bottom will have a significant impact on their wages. Regardless of their level of educational attainment or their occupation, Latinas are paid less than their white male counterparts. Looking at only full-time workers in a regression framework, Marie T.

Logistic regression models examined the relative likelihood of PTB and LBW for women in each Latina subgroup compared with Whites, before and after adjustment for socioeconomic and other covariates.
After adjustment for less favorable socioeconomic characteristics among Latinas compared with Whites, observed differences in the estimated likelihoods of PTB or LBW for Latina subgroups relative to Whites were attenuated and with the exception of PTB among U. As observed in several previous studies, our findings were non-paradoxical: consistent with their socioeconomic disadvantage, Latinas had worse birth outcomes than non-Latina White women.
Although Latina women who are born in the United States U. Not all prior research on birth outcomes has observed a Latina paradox, however. Several of these studies used national data [ 6 , 9 , 13 , 17 ], while others used data from individual states [ 14 , 15 , 18 , 27 ] or local counties or cities; [ 21 , 26 ]. Annual national vital statistics data from through show consistently—although not always markedly— higher rates of PTB among Latinas overall without nativity breakdowns compared with White women [ 28 ].
We conducted a study of Latina-White differences in birth outcomes using recent population-based data for a large sample of childbearing women in California, the state with the largest Latino population. Detailed descriptions of the MIHA methodology have been published previously [ 30 ]. The MIHA survey is mailed to a stratified random sample of women, drawn from the statewide birth record file of California residents aged 15 years and older who gave birth to singletons, twins or triplets from February through May of the survey year; non-respondents are followed up by mail and by telephone.
Completed surveys are linked with birth certificate data, and the final sample is weighted to reflect the population of births statewide. MIHA covers topics related to pregnancy, birth, the post-partum period, and infant health, including social and economic information.
